Simon Phipps - Queen Margaret Union
Queen Margaret Union, University of Glasgow; designed by Walter Underwood & Partners, built 1968.
Concrete and sky. A structure that rises through its surroundings with complete conviction, caught at the moment where weight becomes elevation.
From Simon Phipps' new series of five works centred on the staircase as sculptural object. Phipps has spent over 25 years photographing Britain's postwar modernist architecture, finding form, atmosphere and quiet drama in buildings most people pass without seeing.
Trained as a sculptor, with a background in film, he brings a particular understanding of light, sequence and material to every image he makes.
Perspective changes everything.
