Tokyo Icon Plate - Sumo
The Tokyo Icon collection of Japanese porcelain is produced by the company Kihara based in Arita; a well known porcelain industrial area with a 400 year history.
This plate is part of a series of 69 line-drawn icons representing Tokyo, rendered on Arita porcelain.
Different icons are illustrated in simple, stylised forms: Yamanote Train Line, Tokyo Tower, Sushi, Sumo and a lantern called Kiminarimon meaning Thunder Gate, referring to the landmark at the entrance of Sensō-ji Buddhist temple located in Asakusa.
Together, they capture the spirit of the place through familiar cultural symbols.
Region: Kyūshū and Okinawa
This is Japan’s south-west region including the island of Kyūshū and the sub-tropical island chain of Okinawa. Kyūshū was an early centre of Japanese civilization, and offers many historic treasures, modern cities and volcanic natural beauty. It is home to the ports of Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Fukuoka, the porcelain manufacturing centre in Arita and the Tanegashima Space Center launch site.
